Mike Wyatt, who spent the last six seasons as head football coach of the Rhein Main Razorbacks of the German Football League has been named as General Manager and Head Football Coach of the Show Me Believers of the National Indoor Football League. Wyatt will assume the position immediately and is actively pursuing players for the 2004 season which will begin in March.
Wyatt had spent the better part of the last 13 seasons coaching in Europe. Besides his stint with the Razorbacks, Wyatt had spent two seasons in Sweden where his Stockholm Nordic Vikings won back to back titles in the the Football League of Europe and 5 years in Italy where he guided the Aquile Ferrara to a national championship and a playoff appearance with the Rhinos Milano.
During his stint in Rüsselsheim, Wyatt had led the Razorbacks to 3 GFL South Conference titles and his most recent team was eliminated in the 2003 semi-finals.
The indoor football game should be a natural for his high octane passing offense. During his time in Rüsselsheim, his teams set and broke European passing and total offense records in 2001 and 2003 with the latter amassing 6604 yards in total offense, 5239 passing yards with 57 passing touchdowns and only 9 interceptions. Three Razorback receivers hauled in over 1,000 yards, each, receiving in 2003, the only known time that has happened in football at any level.
Wyatt will be reunited with former Razorback players Scott Pingel who earned All Conference honors in the NIFL in 2003 and Justin Peery, the record setting quarterback for the 2001 Razorbacks, both of whom are Westminster College alumni, as well as Don Brown, a running back who played for the 1994-95 European Champion Nordic Vikings.
"It will be great to be back working with Justin, Scott and Don. I am excited about the indoor game and the wide open offense of that league. I will look to sign some of the former Razorback import players, as well as other former GFL players. I am also interested in signing a couple of German players as well. " Wyatt stated.
The Show Me Believers play in the National Indoor Football League with their home arena, the Family Arena, in St. Charles, Missouri, a suburb of St. Louis. The league is currently comprised of 26 teams. Eight players play on each side of the ball on a field that is 50 yards long and 26 yards wide. The league differs from, and is not affiliated with, the Arena Football League in that players can specialize and are not required to play on both offense and defense as they do in the Arena Football League.
Wyatt´s team will open the 2003 season to a national television audience when they host the Lexington Horsemen.
"I have enjoyed my time spent in Europe and my working relationships with a lot of good people associated with football, here, but I am equally enthusiastic about the new opportunities presented to me with the Believers." Wyatt added.
