The Bergamo Lions defeated Swedish champions Stockholm Mean Machines 42-27 in the Semi Final, to advance to the 2005 Eurobowl championship game. The game is to be played the same as in 2004 against the Vienna Vikings, but this time the Lions are hoping for the results as in earlier years. The Lions were 3 times Eurobowl champions in 2000-01-02.
Stockholm was in the first quarter hopeful of the victory after an intercepted pass gave them the ball in the Lions red zone. The turnover led to a touchdown and a 0-7 lead for the visitors in the first 3 minutes. The Lions offense replied immediately with a touchdown on a 43 yard pass from QB David Macchi to WR Maurizio Barbotti. At the last minute of the first quarter the defense put the lions in the lead with a big play on an interception by Rocco Antoniello and a 37 yard return for a touchdown (14-7).
In the second quarter it was a dominant Lions team as the offense scored 3 touchdowns on the next 3 drives for a 35-7 halftime lead. Two TDs were from runs of Walter Cross of 26 and 31 yards, and the third TD was another long pass 60 yards Macchi to Barbotti. In the first half, Stockholm was only able to achieve 58 yards offense against a strong Lions defense.
The Mean Machines showed their determination in the second half by starting with an onside kick and recovering. This led to a touchdown, but the Lions answered with a scoring drive to make the score 42 -14. By the end of the third quarter, Lions Head Coach John Rosenberg had most of the key starters out of the game, and Stockholm scored two more times in the fourth quarter.
Bergamo running back Walter Cross, the former University of Michigan, led the Lions with another big rushing day, 24 carries for 147 yards and 2 TDs. This was like his performance in the second 1/4 Final game against Amiens (18 for 140 yards, 2 TDs), but not as spectacular as his first Amiens game (44 for 285 and 4 TDs). The Lions Quarterback David Macchi of Valparaiso University was 13 of 17 passing for 3 TDs Over 3 Eurobowl games he has completed 73 % of his passes, and 1 in every 4 completions has been for a TD.
Bergamo will now begin their preparation for the return to the Eurobowl to be played in Vienna on Saturday July 9. The Lions have finished the regular Italian League season with an 8 -0 record and first place. The Italian League playoffs are the 2 weekends following the Eurobowl.
